Saturday 8-Jan-2011: Cheshire x/c Championships

The championships were held at Birchwood Forest Park, hosted by Spectrum Striders RC.  Well done to our champions: Karon, Steph, Nev & Alan, also to Claire for her 4th place.  A note of thanks from Karon Forster:

"'Great course' I heard some blokes comment warming up alongside my efforts in the ladies’ race!  My thoughts exactly.

Wouldn’t have been half as much fun (!!) without some great (choice) encouragement.  Good job I’d run the course three times – had double vision on the 4th lap.  What’s that bloke’s name again who tapes the path through the swamp?  Still wondering where my feet are.

Looking forward to doing it all again in February – or is it March (must be numbness in the head..).  Best Wishes to the flashy vest gang!

Sunday 16-Jan-2011 at 10am: NWSCCL #4 Runcorn Town Park

For the 4th race (of 6) in this league, the conditions were very muddy with rain throughout the race, getting heavier at the end!  The two lap course was 4.57 miles miles long (as measured by a GPS)

The Ladies team continued their absolute dominance of the league, winning once again.  Well done to Liz, Claire, Karon, Debbie, Steph & Anne.  Having won all 4 races, the ladies are in a strong lead with 2 races to go.

The men finished a good second place behind a very strong Liverpool RC team.  They are now tied in the lead with Liverpool RC after 4 races, with two race wins each.

Congratulations to Alan Peers who was first V70.  Well done to Wayne, Chris, Dave & Kit for new PBs.

Congratulations to Anne Hewitt on her new Ladies Vet 60 Club record of 2:18:41.  Alan Peers' time of 1:42:17 was a Mens Vet 70 Club record, beating Eric Pendleton's time of 1:50:00 from the 2002 Wilmslow race.

Sunday 6-Feb-2011 at 11am: Liverpool & District Cross Country League Championship race

Well done to the Striders who ran.  Here is a race report from Julian:

"At Clarke Gardens, despite the 24 hours of rain which preceded the race, it was surprisingly dry underfoot.  The wind was very noticeable when driving there and when waiting for the start, but eased during the race so it was not so obvious when we ran.

A superb run by Graham Houghton against much tougher opposition than he meets at most of the Sunday League races yielded 9th place.  Great to see 12 Strider runners enjoying the 6 mile course."

The course was 9.7k (6 miles) long according to Colin's GPS.

Saturday 19-Feb-2011: English National Cross Country Championships at Alton Towers

"None of us have ever run a cross country that was as muddy.  It was tough out there today.  Only on the steep hills was there a little less mud.  For the runners it was really hard to find a good running line.  The spectator areas were even more slippery than out of the course, so you needed spikes or studs to just walk around.

The courses were shortened by 2k perhaps as the course was so muddy."  [There were several injuries on the day but they were not as serious as the rumours suggested! - Les].

Saturday 5-Mar-2011:  Inter-counties Cross Country Championships (Cofton Park, Birmingham)

The 2011 Championships took place as part of the McCain Birmingham UKA Cross Challenge Final.  The race was also the UK trials for the IAAF World Cross Country Championship.

Entry is via qualification & selection following performances in the County cross country championships, so this race is not in the Striders Club Championships.

Sunday 6-Mar-2011 at 10am:  NWSCCL race #6 at Birchwood Forest Park

This was the final race of the season.  The distance was 5.16 miles this year.  Liz Whitfield & Claire Andrew missed the race to concentrate on the previous days Inter-counties x/c but the ladies team still continued their winning streak.  The men again finished a strong second.

Congratulations to Spectrum Ladies who once again have won all 6 races and of course won the league.  Well done to all Spectrum Ladies who have raced this season:

Tuesday 15-Mar-2011 at 10am:  Falesia 5k (Portugal)

This race is organised during the annual training camp in Portugal which many Striders attend (brief details here).  Please note that this is not an accurately measured course.

Here is a race report from Julian Spencer:

"There was a bumper entry at the Falesia 5k with 112 finishers.  The course record was smashed by Estonian runner, Kiuts Keio, in a time of 15:02.  He took around 90 seconds off the previous fastest time.

Nine Striders finished, although unfortunately Brad Ehlen had to drop out.  The only Strider to win a prize was Anne Fortune as first LV55 in a time of 25:20.  This was a debut race in Portugal for Christine Ramsdale.

A huge contingent from the German Club, Hamburger Laufladen, took part.  This is the Club that Tony Bell and Shelley have joined in Germany.

Conditions were superb, with the appearance of the sun properly all morning with not a raindrop in site and no wind either.  The tough course of 2¾ laps has three descents and two climbs, so although it is a net downhill course it is not ideal for fast times."

This road race was run over a largely traffic-free, mostly out-and-back course on the St Annes Promenade.  Conditions were good for quick times: mild with some light drizzle and hardly any wind.  The race was cheap to enter and there was an excellent goody bag!  Organised by Dave Waywell of Wesham RR.
