Race reports

Vince Alcock:

After months of training, the day arrived for my attempt at my second Marathon.  Chester under my belt in October – now Manchester in April.  In the last few weeks of training, I discovered I had my own personal pace maker.  Picky had kindly offered to run with me and try to guide me to my target of a 4 hour marathon.

Preparation was to start early Saturday evening and suddenly took a turn for the worse.  Much to my embarrassment I had to make a call to Thommo to purchase a club vest as mine was AWOL and still hasn't turned up!  Yes Thommo, I still owe you for it!

Slept okay on the Saturday night, but awoke early with pre-race nerves and the events of the next couple of hours made me wonder whether they were pre-drive nerves!  Picky, Stuart (a friend from parkrun) and myself waited at seven on my path.  Five past came, ten past came, then as we approached quarter past, our chauffeuse arrived.  We met fellow Striders at Old Trafford, calmed our nerves and headed to the start.

Picky talked tactics and as we set off, we fell into our stride and started to count the miles away.  Picky was nothing but supportive and advised all the way round, speed up, ease off and incredibly after 17 miles we had three minutes in the bag for our target.  By 18 miles, it had all turned around.  Stomach cramps, tired legs and an unexpected toilet stop, not for the faint hearted, and the time started to slip.  Run, walk, run, walk, jog, walk we managed to get round.  4 hours 13 minutes and 1 second, a PB by 13 minutes and 25 seconds!  I was disappointed not to have got the 4 hours, but elated to get such a PB!  30 seconds a mile I guess is not to be discounted.

Thank you to the Striders who were roadside and supportive all the way around.  A fantastic experience and a honour to have had Picky run with me, I learnt a lot and we had a laugh as we went round.  Thank you Picky.

At the finish, a fellow runner gave Stuart a packet of jelly babies as he was in need of a sugar rush.  Stuart passed me the packet and as I took one, to my surprise, fifty five pounds was in the packet.  Picky, with help from the organisers, has managed to track down the runner, who had put the money in his sweet packet for safe keeping and forgot.  He has told us to make a charitable donation with the money as he was so thrilled we tracked him down.  parkrun and Clatterbridge cancer hospital will receive half each.

A fantastic day, a fantastic experience then the drive home (Stuart borrowed some money and caught the train!).  Big shout out to Kate for driving us, but also for sorting training plans and routes that made the training so varied and fun!

Steve Pickford:

Medical Discovery

At the turn of the year coming off the back of the Amsterdam marathon, I decided to run in my home town marathon – Manchester (although it barely touches Manchester on its route, but that’s another story).  I decided to try a new training plan called the Hanson’s Plan.  Several Club runners have successfully followed this with great results.

As my training began in December, I felt good, racking up 40 miles per week for the first 3 weeks, but soon I began to feel lethargic, as a chest infection began to take hold.  The next few weeks of training were spasmodic.  I eventually had to have two weeks off work during which time I did no running.  It was at this point that I began to search the internet for reasons why following a marathon I always seem to get chest infections.

It is amazing what you can find using Google.  I found out that many extreme athletes (runners, cyclists, swimmers etc.) due to their extended periods of activity, can suffer from URTIs (upper respitory tract infections).  Several hypotheses try to explain this, with the most popular being a change of bacteria in the gut that leads to URTIs.  To combat this, it is advised to take supplements such as Yakult, Miso soup, which are foods which contain naturally occurring bacteria that counter balance the effects of extreme exercise.

Change of Plan

Since I had missed several weeks of training, I decided to withdraw from the Manchester Marathon and defer my place until next year.  Unfortunately, this race doesn’t allow this.  It was either run or don’t run.  So this is where I decided to offer my services as a pacer to the first club member who wanted them.  I hadn’t thought through what I was going to do if no-one wanted me to run with them.  So it was a good job that Vince Alcock asked if I would pace him round for a 4 hour marathon.

I haven’t paced anyone other than myself before.  My usual marathon pace is around 7:30min miles which gives a 3:15 marathon.  A 4 hour marathon equates to 9:10min miles.

Race day came and Vince was keen to achieve his target of a 4 hour marathon.  The crowds at Manchester were superb.  The race started and we started out at a perfect 9:00min mile.  All seemed well as we passed the halfway mark at 1:59:47, perfect timing.  So far the plan was working.  As we exited Altrincham and started heading back towards Trafford it was apparent the pace was starting to tell with Vince.  We began to slip to 09:15min miles.  Vince although struggling with the pace showed a true marathon spirit to finish the marathon with a 13 minute pb.  This was one of the most rewarding things I have done and would recommend it to anyone.

Jelly Baby Man

As we finished the race and entered the baggage area, one of Vince’s parkrun friends was lying on the floor with a water bottle in one hand and a bag of jelly babies in the other.  As he passed them round he told us that a kind fellow runner had thought he was in need of some glucose as he was looking a bit pasty and handed him the bag of jelly babies and said eat some of these, they’ll make you feel human again.  Then he walked off after handing the packet of jelly babies over.

As the packet was passed around Vince put his hand in and pulled out £55 in cash.  The good Samaritan marathon runner must have forgotten he had stored the cash there for safe keeping.  We looked around the baggage area but couldn’t spot him.  We decided to head for home and contact the race organisers to see if they could track him down.  Although not knowing his name or race number might make it a tad tricky...

I phoned the race organisers and told them the story.  They asked for Vince’s friends name so they could check out his finishing time as they would email 300 places either side of this time in the hope that it would capture the good Samaritan.  Although the email had to be worded carefully, otherwise 600 people would all claim to be the owners of the £55!  It was a long shot but worth it.  Guess what?  It worked.

Dennis marched all the way with the Huddersfield Marathon Band, who reclaimed their world record of the fastest marching band to complete a marathon!

Carolyn's time of 4:38:19 was a new club FV55 record, beating Janet Redpath's time of 4:56:34 set in London on 22-Apr-2007.  It also broke her PB by 20 min 39 sec, set last year at London.

Race report from Carolyn Arber:

After getting a club place, I was going to be standing on the start line of the London Marathon for the 2nd year in a row.  As I only started running at 50, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would run a marathon let alone two so was determined to enjoy the experience of my final marathon.  My training had gone well, which was assisted by the relatively rain free and snow free months leading up to the big day and I was confident in beating my time from last year, as this would be my final marathon.

I travelled to London on the early train on Saturday morning surrounded by beer swilling Wigan fans who were on their way to Wembley so the journey was full of laughter and banter.  I went straight to the Excel to pick up my number and soak in the atmosphere and treated myself to a new pair of 3/4 pants and a t-shirt with the marathon logo on, as this was to be my last marathon!

John and I then went for a walk to sort out the very important job of locating the pub where I was meeting the family and other Striders for post race beers and we then went and checked into our hotel.  I began to lay out my race kit and pin my number on my vest and to my horror, discovered I had left my shorts at home???

The shops were closed by now so I had to decide if I was going to run in my underwear or wear the new 3/4 leggings I had just bought!  A no brainer really, although the underwear could well have meant that I would be interviewed by the BBC again!  So, first
rule of running, never wear anything new on race day, had to go out of the window, and doubly so as I also then had to wear my new top as I couldn't possibly wear orange and cerise pink together (it's a girl thing!).

I calmed down a bit and went to meet Kate, Alan and Vince for a lovely pasta feast albeit it a very dodgy area between a lap dancing club and a shop that specialises in cross dressing???

The following morning I took my potato cakes (my race day breakfast of choice) to the dining room to be told that it would not open until 8.  There were several other runners staying, so in the dark, we managed to plug in the industrial toaster, break into the fridge and locate milk and butter and scramble together our most important meal of that day.

I got to the start after an emotional phone conversation with my mum on the train and was comforted by a fellow runner eating a cheese and pickle sandwich (a stranger breakfast than mine even) and arrived at the park.  I soaked in the atmosphere in the sun as this was going to be my last marathon (have I mentioned that?) and queued (several times) for the loo before making my way to the pens only to find myself at the back of pen 9 with all the walk/runners. No use worrying about that then as I was more concerned that it was getting warmer and I was in 3/4 pants.

Eventually we got going, but it was very crowded and there were people in front of me walking before the mile 1 marker????  I weaved my way through them and passed the marching band and other various fancy dressers, but found it difficult to get into a rhythm as it was so congested.  Never mind Cal, I said to myself, this is your last marathon so just enjoy it.

Unbelievably, my pace was pretty constant and I got through 13.1 miles just where I wanted to be and feeling strong.  I had seen my family a couple of times and the crowd support was amazing, the sunshine had brought everyone out and there was a real party atmosphere.  The weather was then getting hotter and a lot of people around me started to struggle, but I still felt good and was looking forward to seeing the family again at mile 16......... and that is when the wheels fell off.

They weren't where I thought they would be and I lost it mentally.  They were only about 400m further in, but something had gone in my head and I just couldn't pick myself up after that.  The warnings that marathons were 80% in your head and 20% in your legs certainly came true for me.  I stopped and had a hug from all the family, and other bystanders too I think, and started running again, but however hard I tried to push on, those last 10 miles were so hard.

Again, the fantastic supporters lining the route were amazing and really lifted my flagging spirit and I managed to not look at all the lost souls in Blackfriars Tunnel wailing and moaning like Dante's inferno, and made it onto Birdcage Walk knowing the end was in sight.  I even managed to smile and overtake a few people up the Mall and finally I was over the finishing line, of my last marathon!

My time wasn't what I had wanted, but was 20 minutes quicker than last year and a new club age record, so not a bad result in all.

I made it to the pub and swapped stories with Karl, Alan, Rob and Geoff and we all enjoyed some post race beers and met up with our families and the Striders support team of Kate and Vince!

I have now decided to hang up my marathon shoes and get back out those Jimmy Choo's!  High heels; I have missed you.

As I write this the pain has started to fade ( I can only compare it to giving birth) and I've done that twice and now done a marathon twice too so this is it................or is it?????

When the club decided to organise another UK team event, I thought that sounds like fun.  I thoroughly enjoyed the Cheshire Ring Relay last year, so I was glad that I got the opportunity to participate in this year's event.

Heather and I did leg 2, which went up to Stoodley Pike from Cragg Vale.  I wasn't quite sure why we needed to do a recce, but having now done both the recce and the real event, I was glad that we had, as unlike other fell races I've done so far, the course wasn't partially marked.

The weather for the recce was glorious and I enjoyed the run and meeting runners from other clubs.  One thing I hadn't realised was that quite a bit of our leg wasn't actually on the Calderdale Way, so I'd tried to make a mental note of where the leader thought we would go wrong.

Race day came.  The weather was nothing like the previous weekend.  It was cold, windy and raining.  I got no sympathy at home and was just told that this would be a 'proper' fell race in the wet.

On arriving in Cragg Vale, we made our way down to the handover point outside the pub and waited.  The pub was doing a roaring trade in bacon butties and tea.  I resisted temptation, although I was certainly getting quite cold while we were waiting.

We saw Karl and Steve come in and cheered Julian and Adam on their way.  Then we waited for the mass start.

Once we started running, I was no longer cold and started enjoying myself even though the weather didn't offer any respite.  We'd just passed the ladder stile after the boggy bit near the Pike and it started hailing.  I think Heather's words were something like 'this is a bit grim!'.  We made our way towards the marshal and the Pike and then got off there as quickly as we could.

Luckily, the weather did improve as we went back into the valley.  At Lumbutts, there was support in the form of Kate and Vinnie.  Vinnie practised his backwards running by running just in front of us with some Jelly Babies, which were very welcome!  Apparently we looked happy compared to some of the other runners they had seen going past!

We continued to make our way back, remembering to ignore the sign at the stables, turn right just after the pub, right opposite Morrisons in the valley and then right at the for sale signs above Todmorden.  In what seemed like no time, we were back at the leisure centre.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and my new waterproof was well and truly tested!  I'm now looking forward to taking part in whatever next year's team event is!

Notes from Neville:

Jane Lowe and Richard MacIlwaine were doing the race for the first time and despite the wet and muddy conditions, they really enjoyed it.  Richard, to much scoffing, boldly predicted that it wouldn’t rain during the race and he was right as it stayed dry for the race and the prize giving.

Jane had the last laugh when she nearly lost her shoe in the mud as Dave, who was laughing at her, lost his shoe in the mud!

Saturday 7-Jun-2014 at 8:30am: Sandstone Trail Challenge

The Challenge is end-to-end and follows the full Sandstone Trail route from Whitchurch to Frodsham.  The official distance is 34 miles but the organisers reckon it's just under 33 miles and has about 3700 feet of climb.  There is a cut-off time of 9pm to finish.  The Challenge is an LDWA (Long Distance Walkers Association) event that supports runners, rather than a race.

Run report from Sue Buck:

Just over a year ago, I found myself detaching labels from weary runners and walkers at the finish of the Sandstone Trail Challenge.  The Sandstone Trail is a long distance footpath that runs from Whitchurch to Frodsham and is approximately 33 miles long.

I'd first heard about the challenge about 10 years ago, when it was organised by Cheshire Fire and Rescue and couldn't believe how anyone would manage to walk 33 miles in one day let alone run it, but it did look like fun though.  The Challenge is now organised by Helsby RC.  I went on about it enough that Andy threatened to enter me.  This, along with the fact that it was going to be on what would have been my late father's 90th birthday,
meant that I decided to bite the bullet and enter.

I canvassed opinion about training from other ultra runners and then looked online for a plan.  I quickly discovered that plans were few and far between and the world of ultra marathon running appears to be a lot more flexible and less prescriptive than what I was used to.  However, I found something that was time based online and adapted it according to some of the advice I'd been given.

I was a bit naive to say the least!!  In my head, the training runs were on cool sunny days, where I could just keep running forever!  Er no!  The reality for the first couple of weeks at least: hail, gale force winds, tree strewn paths, Delamere Forest closed and the long runs turning into a long cross country with loads of mud. Luckily, I like running in mud, but it made it very hard going at times.

I had been told that it was time on your feet that mattered and the other key fact was to run at a pace you perceive you can keep going at all day.  This sounded very appealing, but in fact it does still become extremely tiring after a couple of hours and you are carrying a pack!  Luckily the weather and my stamina improved and we did have some very enjoyable long runs along the river.

Race day finally arrived.  Despite the forecast for thunder storms, it was dry in Frodsham and the sun was even trying to get through. We boarded the bus and set off.  A few miles outside Whitchurch, the heavens opened, and the rain was accompanied by thunder and lightning!  I did ask what should I do if we had lightning during the race?  Keep going and don't stand under a tree was the answer!

We were dropped off in Whitchurch and it wasn't long until the race began.  The rain was a lot lighter by now and
actually made for reasonable running weather.  However, the paths that I'd remembered as being firm on our recce along the canal were soft, muddy and very wet.  After about 3 miles, the trail left the canal to make its way across fields to the first checkpoint, which were very slippery and much more overgrown than I'd remembered.  I think most of us had a lot of nettle stings by the end of the challenge.

The section after the first checkpoint goes over Rawhead and is fantastic running, with soft ground and forest trails.  I thoroughly enjoyed this bit.  By this point, I was running pretty much on my own, occasionally catching up with other runners.  At one point, I was in light cloud and was beginning to wonder if I would actually need to use my compass for the first time, but fortunately not.

I passed through the next checkpoint where I was offered words of encouragement and headed over to Beeston Castle and back to the mud and nettles.  However, it didn't feel like it was too long until I got to the checkpoint at Rock Farm.  According to the sign, it was only 10.5 miles to the finish.  For some reason, I thought it was further than that so I felt very happy that the finish was nearer than I had thought.  I still felt good and my legs hadn't seized up at all.

The next point of reference was the water station at Gresty's Waste.  I knew a couple of the people here so I got a lot of support and was told that I still looked strong.  The other advantage for me now was that I was on home turf so knew exactly how to break the distance down in my head.

I made my way onwards through Delamere Forest to the final checkpoint at Manley Common, to be greeted by Joe and Mario from Helsby RC.  Unfortunately, my right leg started hurting just after this.  Luckily, I could still run  downhill and some of the flat, but I began to really understand the concept of ultra running being as much about your head as your body. I dug deep, ran where I could and walked if I had too.

Caroline was at the start of the ascent onto Frodsham Hill and shouted some very welcome words of support, which I was very grateful for and this spurred me on to get to the end.

It wasn't too long before I got up to the monument on the hill and then I knew it was downhill from there.  I ran as fast as my very tired legs would let me off the hill, past the church and then finally to the community centre, ready for my pie!!

Finished!

All in all, I had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed it.  I had said never again when I was training, but having done the event, I'll be back next year!!

Race report from Neville:

This was the 1st race in this year's Fell Grand Prix championship.  There were a large number of Helsby and Pensby runners, but only a few Striders.

We were huddled in the car for 10 minutes before the start of the race, sheltering from a thunder storm, with torrential rain and hail.  The rain stopped as quickly as it had started and we got out of the car to find the road was now a raging torrent.  We left the car and hoped it would still be there when we got back!

The race started along a forest track and after about a mile, there were two tall rickety ladder stiles we had to queue to get over and we then followed a long steady climb up a limestone escarpment to a rock climb (yes rock climb) over the last 10 feet.

A long steady descent then brought us to the foot of the 2nd climb up a steep and very greasy slope.  The route back was on a fast track through the forest.  A number of runners managed to get lost and they arrived at the finish, coming from every direction, including some on the back of a Land Rover!!!

We done to Karon who was 1st Lady home and Andy who was 2nd V60.
