Here is a race report from Debbie Read:

"Cross Country season finished, spikes washed, dried and put away until next October.  First fell race of the season, Cloud Nine, not for another three weeks.  What am I going to do to get my weekend mud fix?

Ping!  I did Parbold Hill multi terrain race last year with Sue Buck.  That was nice and muddy – in fact so muddy we both lost a shoe to the mud!  Given the rain we've had, it'll be even muddier and it's hilly!  Perfect!

So on a dry, but cool, Saturday afternoon, about 500 like minded runners, some of whom had no idea what they were in for looking at their lovely clean (in one case brand new) road shoes, gathered on the wet, boggy school field ready for the start.  Given the recent weather and having prior knowledge of the course, I'd decided that it wasn't going to be a PB day, so I'd not bust a gut, but enjoy the day.

At the start-line Heather and I stood near the back having a chat, while Alison and Jude nudged their way forward to stand near the lads.  (I think they just wanted to get near the man in the mankini who was on his stag weekend!)

Being near the back, getting out of the school field was a stop/start affair as 500 people squeezed through a 4 foot wide gateway, but once we got out onto the road there was plenty of space.  After running more than half a mile on a flat road, we turned onto an uphill dirt track which seemed to go on for quite a while.

I managed to pass a few runners only to come to a standstill – another fault with starting near the back – as the queues for the stiles/kissing gates can be several minutes each.  Once over the first stile, it was single file for a while, again being near the back, it was frustrating having to run slower than I wanted.  Then, downhill across farmers fields, lots of space, this was more like it!  After a short stretch on the same road that we'd started on, it was time to face "The Hill".

Last year as Sue and I drove there, we came off the M6 and after a couple of miles the road started to go down and down and down.  I can't remember who said it, but one of us said "this is a bit steep – I hope our hill isn't this steep."  Little did we realise that this was our hill!  But instead of driving down it, we had to run up it!

Once you turn off at the top of this hill, you're pretty well half way around the course and apart from a couple of inclines, it's mostly downhill from here with lots of stiles/kissing gates.  There's one field where you have to climb over a wooden ranch style fence (it's covered with carpet so that you don't get splinters).  To get out of this field, there's a "Beecher's Brook" type fence which has a carpet-covered barbed wire fence with a hay bale under it for you to climb onto on the take off side.  However, there's a metre drop on the landing side.  Runners approach this obstacle in a variety of ways from being suicidal or athletic or, like me, being a wimp (the photographer said I was very ladylike).

The final obstacle, a couple of hundred metres from the finish is "The Ditch" You have to drop/jump/slide down about a metre, paddle a couple of steps through the water – great for getting the mud off your shoes – then scramble up the bank to get out.  It was so slippery this year that the marshal was helping us out.

Across the last field, 200 metres on the road, into the school field and then the finish.  A bottle of water, Mars Bar and gift.  Last year it was a shoe bag, this year it was a flat pack water bottle - Mick reckons it's a DIY breathalyser kit!  Changing facilities/showers are limited, however the farmer does provide a tanker with a hose attachment to power-wash the mud off you.  This is great for your shoes, but very painful on bare flesh!

Spectrum did very well.  Both Chris and Jude won prizes and both the men's and ladies' teams won prizes!

Was it muddy?  Yes!
Was it hill?  Yes!
Did I enjoy it?  Yes, loved it!
Would I recommend it? Y es!

Oh and by the way, I got a race PB."

My Bolton Hill Marathon Experience - by Dave Hudd

As part of our build up to do this year's Lakeland 100, myself and Chris Millington targeted the Bolton Hill Marathon as a prep race.  We both did the first one last year and this year we had the added bonus of two days, so we decided back to back marathons would be great preparation.

After a few weeks off in November, my training had been going really well as I kept pushing myself a bit harder and further each week and having clocked up over 400 miles this year already, I was ready for Bolton.

But then disaster nearly struck as I sprained my left ankle ligaments the Sunday before doing the Cloud 9 fell race.  I was feeling really strong at the time, so was disappointed to have to hobble to the finish, but then it was a race against time to get it right for the week after.  Luckily, with plenty of RICE, I was able to get it good enough for day 1, so I strapped it up and went for it, hoping that it would hold up.

Day 1

Day 1 went really well, as I beat last year's time by nearly 10 minutes and felt good throughout.  The course offered a steady climb to the top of Winter Hill for about 4 miles, before a descent, and then along a very poor and bumpy road around Rivington Pike, and then off onto the moors.

After a loop around White Coppice and passing the reservoirs, it was time for the last killer climb back up towards Rivington Pike.  This was at 21 miles and there was no point doing anything but walk it at that stage of the race.  Once back up to the highest point, it was steadily downhill for the last 3 miles to the finish. I ran the last bit very strongly, but soon regretted it after I had crossed the line as my legs were so painful I was nearly in tears.

My wife kindly reminded me that I had to come back and do it again the day after to which I replied, 'God knows how'.  I tried to eat the right things at the right time for the rest of Saturday, had an ice bath and walked the dog to help aid my recovery.  I'm not sure how bad my legs would have been had I not done any of that as come Sunday morning, I could still barely walk.  I have done marathons recently and felt fine again the day after, but both times I have done Bolton, the hills have seemed to take their toll.

Day 2

Day 2 was all about getting round, although I had set myself a target of doing both days in under 8 hours, so I always had that in the back of my mind.

I spent most of the way round cursing my stupidity for entering both days, but also telling myself this was necessary to get me used to running on trashed legs ready for the Lakeland 100.  So I plodded round and managed it just over 20 minutes slower than the Saturday and in a grand total of 7 hours 37 minutes.

My fitness felt good all through day 2 and I never tired, but just couldn't get my legs going as well as the day before, which was understandable as this was the first time I had attempted back to back marathons.  I had done it and also under 8 hours, so was really pleased with how it had gone and especially as my ankle held out.

Overall

I finished 7th overall for both days and well done to all the other Striders who ran either one or both days.  It was a really well organised race, run over a challenging but scenic course, and it was a great achievement to do it, especially twice.

After a short recovery period to give my ankle time to get back to 100% , it's gonna be time to step things up a bit with 'The Wall Ultra' - the next prep on our Lakeland 100 journey.

Bolton Hill Marathon Double 2014 – by Charlie Sharpe

A really well organised trail marathon with about 800m ascent.  It's fairly local to me and the nearest thing you could get away with calling a 'hill' to where I live.  I could remember the course from last year.  It was only a single marathon last year.  I had a good race then too and set the course record with 3 hours 22 min, so this year they made it TWICE AS MUCH FUN with 2 days!

There was a stronger, larger field and it was a bit more muddy, with same great organisation - Phil and the team were perfect as far as I could see! There was lots of support at the finish as runners jogged / skipped / sprinted / collapsed over the finish line!  Thanks to everyone involved with making it a great event!

Since the Spine (268 miles along the Pennine Way) in January, training has been going great.  Most weekends have involved a Saturday trail race of about 10km and a parkrun in the morning on heavily fatigued legs, totalling around 30km, and a Sunday run of 25-40km around the Bolton Hill route and surrounding area.  Adding to a midweek 30-40 km run and some shorter faster runs seems to have worked well.

As for the race, on day 1, I started out in about 5th as the first 5km climbs up Coal Pit road towards the TV mast on Winter Hill, before a good quick descent down the mast road to the first Check Point about 10km in.  I didn't check the watch at all during the race on either day.  I figured if I felt good and was running well, and I know the course and how far to go, I don't need to see any data from the watch.

Day 1

After the CP, the course follows Georges Lane, which is cobbled and quite exciting to run on, I moved up a place, before crossing Sheep House Lane and the muddiest part of the course across the moor for a short distance to hit a farm track, where I had now jumped up a few more places and was feeling good.

There's a small hill before hitting the 12 mile CP (which is also the 16 mile CP - runners do a loop to arrive back here after White Coppice) and I was still moving well.  I had an incredible urge to check the watch for time, but resisted.  This was quite a quick section here, before arriving back at the CP, where I was apparently 4 min 30 away from the lead.  I grabbed a bottle of water - how exciting....

Next up, the course weaves along a couple of reservoirs in the trees and is pretty scenic once again, and it's a relatively fast section.  By the time I hit the 21 mile point, passing the cafe and nearing the school below the Pike, I had closed down the gap to 60 seconds and a friendly cheer from Jo and Mia, who were doing a great job cheering some of us runners on course!

There is a bit of a climb back up towards Georges Lane and I could see the leader and seemed to be closing him down.  After the climb, I put a good pace in towards the aid station at 22-ish miles, before a short muddy climb to cross the mast road and the final descent/ last couple of miles to the finish.

I put a good pace in on the down hill and was moving really well after taking the lead at the aid station - the downhill training seems to have paid off recently too!  It's a fun descent where you can let the legs roll before hitting a set of steps and the final 800m along a road and into the park where the finish line awaits.

After day 1 I headed to the gym for a shower and did a mobility session which left the legs feeling great and ready for....day 2.

Day 2

Day 2 was the same course exactly and started in a similar fashion.  I was a few places back from the front initially, with the addition of some runners only doing day 2 to keep us double runners on our toes.  It felt like my heart rate was up slightly compared to Saturday, although my legs felt better on day 2.

Looking back on day 2 I should have consumed some more energy during the race perhaps as I actually noticed there was a bit of a climb at the 21 mile point this time! Wink  I think time-wise I was 3 mins down over the first half and 2 mins down over the 2nd half compared to day 1.  Happy with that.

Overall

As I mentioned, the marshals were great and the route was well marked.  There were a lot of people dotted around the course supporting friends and family, which was great to see!  Looks like a great time was had by all (perhaps aside from one or two people with achy legs).  Well done to all involved!  Great to catch up with a lot of friends and share the weekend!

Lots of Striders were out in force!
