This is a race in the 30th Anniversary Club Grand Prix, a series of races celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Spectrum Striders RC in 2013.

Spectrum Striders won this race with 264 points, followed by Helsby RC with 254, Pensby Runners with 195 and and Tattenhall Runners with 167.

Sat/Sun 20/21-Jul-2013 10am start:  The 12 Labours Of Hercules

This was a 24 hour ultra running event based at Losehill Hall near Castleton, covering up to 78 miles & 17,000ft ascent.  It was for solo runners or teams.

You start from the Hall, visit one of 12 locations, perform a "labour", then return to the Hall.

Charlie Sharpe won the event, completing the full distance and all 12 "Labours" in a time of 16:10:49, leading by about 48 mins.

9 solo runners and 8 teams completed all 12 Labours.   Another 28 solo runners & teams completed part of the event.

This was race 3 (of 3) in the 2013 inter-club fell race competition with Spectrum Striders, Helsby RC, Pensby Runners and Tattenhall Runners. 

Helsby RC won this race with 322 points, followed by Spectrum Striders with 234, Pensby Runners with 189 and and Tattenhall Runners with 120.

Helsby RC won the overall series.

This was a closed race for the Inter-club Fell Competition, with just a few invited guests from other clubs.

Sunday 8-Sep-2013 at 10am:  Yorkshireman Off Road Marathon (Haworth, category CL, 26.1 miles, 3280ft climb)

Race report from Andy Gaskell:

"I sometimes wonder why I do these runs.  It all looks great when you send off the cheque and you read some of the reviews.
‘It was epic’
‘Best thing I’ve ever done’
‘Great scenery’
‘Lovely people’

What they don’t necessarily tell you is the number of hills, fields full of cow dung, paths smothering in nettles and sheep with their beady eyes.

Not to mention the odd mad dog chasing you out of a farm yard – it all spookily looks like Emmerdale Farm.

Compound all this with the fact that I fell into a bog up to my waist at 10 miles then had to run the rest of the race looking like I’d had an all over mud pack.  I thank Dan for not stopping and helping me to climb out.  Funny though, my skin did look lovely and smooth when I washed it off!

Having completed a couple of off road marathons before, I knew this was going to be a bit tricky.  This route had more hills than I had done previously in a race and I didn’t know the full route.  In the end it didn’t really matter.

There were plenty of runners to follow and the route signs were OK although we did get a little lost at one point which cost us a few minutes.  I would recommend this race to anyone looking at an off road marathon but perhaps not as a first.

If the weather had been poor, it could have been a problem as map reading would have been necessary.

The feed stations and marshals were great and cost is very reasonable considering some of the prices especially as you get hot pot and cake at the finish along with a tech t-shirt.

4hrs 36min ish – a great day out.

Sunday 15-Sep-2013:  Great North Run

Race report from Alison Draper:

"I’d never been that interested about competing in any of the big events such as the London Marathon, Great North or South Run etc. It all seemed too much hassle travelling, too expensive and too many people running. I’d rather compete in a low key event, close to home and seeing some familiar faces.

However, when I saw the 2013 Great North Run was on my 30th Birthday, I changed my mind and decided to enter the ballot. I was lucky enough to get a place and a number to start with the fast paced club runners, just behind the elite men that included Mo Farah!

With training not going to plan, running 5 minutes below my 10 mile PB, just a month before the GNR, I was getting a bit worried. However a month before the event I went on a few 11/12 mile runs and was feeling more confident about the half marathon.

The weather wasn’t great but the event start was very well organised and there was such an amazing atmosphere it didn’t matter about the conditions. As usual I got carried away on the day and ran my first mile in 6mins 11secs! However I soon slowed down and enjoyed the race with crowds lining every part of the route, bands playing and sponsor buses cheering, it was something I had never experienced before.

The last few miles were hard going but I finished in 1:32:50, which was over 2 minutes faster than what I was aiming for. The day ended with a few well deserved cocktails in Newcastle.  It seems mad with too many non-runners but all in all the Great North Run on my 30th Birthday, finished with a night on the Toon, was a fantastic and memorable experience.

Most members of the club have celebrated their 30th birthdays (some more years ago than others!) but I would definitely recommend running in the Great North Run for the atmosphere and experience if you get the opportunity!"
