Top of month - Top of pageRace report from Neville Griffiths:
"We had a clear view across the hills to Stoodley Pike but a keen wind made sure we didn’t stand around admiring it for too long.
This race turned out to be one of the toughest in the championship this year. The route was very rocky, so you needed to watch every step, and with over 270 runners it was difficult to pick a good line at the start. Added to this were all the muddy spots and standing water, after all the rain, so you needed to concentrate throughout the race."

According to the web site, it is "challenging off-road running… tough, twisting trails… including the famed Hills of Hell and the Bog of Doom!". Charlie's GPS showed the course as 18.6k – just over 11½ miles.
Charlie said:
"It had 4 substantial bogs, one was about 200m long and chest deep water, another was deep in patches but I managed to get lucky with line choice, the one near the end 'the bog of doom' was pretty long with a section of wading followed by a series of quick dips! Great fun!"

Race report from Carolyn Arber:
"Sunday 4-Nov saw the first Tatton Half Marathon with 1500 runners taking part in this very well organised and enjoyable race on an undulating course.
The scenery was beautiful starting and finishing in Tatton Park, with a ground mist, autumn leaves and some very puzzled looking deer, and then and taking in Knutsford, Mobberley and Ashley.
The parking was easy and right next to the start and finish which meant we could stay and keep warm in the car until the race start as it was a chilly morning, but bright and dry with no wind, in fact ideal running conditions.
The start was a little delayed and I’m not sure why but the race was well marshalled with lots of spectator support within the park and around the course which was great. There were a few cattle grids which caused bottlenecks not least because the covering of them wasn't ideal, they looked as if they had just borrowed some door mats for the day!
There were no road closures which we were aware of before the race, but the main road through Mobberley was a bit hairy at times as we appeared to be sharing it with a bike race!
Mile 11-12 was a lonnnnnnnnnnnng uphill drag which was quite testing before entering the park again and knowing the finish was in sight but the finish was well organised with a nice goody bag and plenty of drinks on hand.
Not a PB for me but I was running with a friend who I am doing the London Marathon with, but a very enjoyable race finished off nicely with a stop at Costa for coffee and cake on the way home.
This is a race I would certainly do again."

Race report from Neville Griffiths:
"This race was the last in this year’s championship. It is situated on the southern edge of the Lake District, overlooking Morecambe Bay.
The Fell Championship this year was hotly contested in the Vet sections, with only one point between Chris Millington & Phil Daintith, so both of them needed to do the race. In the Lady Vets, Steph Charman had led all year but Karon Forster came with a late run of races to take the championship.
Dunnerdale was a fitting end to the championship and the route covered 4 climbs over The Knott, Raven’s Crag, Stickle Pike (the highest) and Great Stickle, with good running in between the tops.
We were in the Lakes so we had to have some rain, with showers before the race and a light shower during the race, then a dry spell at the end of
the race.
Visibility was good with great views across Morecambe Bay, Black Combe (a race some of us did earlier in the year} and Caw (on the edge of Duddon Valley)."
This was the last race in the 2012 Striders Club Fell Championship.

Race report from Dave Hudd:
"PB Mania at Preston 10!
It was a perfect day for running and as a result of the Preston Guild series a bigger than normal field assembled for the start of the fast two lap course. The cold limbs soon warmed up as we set off at a brisk pace.
Chris Millington shot off in the distance and soon went out of sight as he ran a blinder in just over an hour and a PB. The next I saw of him was at the finish where he had already cooled down and was complaining he was freezing (he should have gone a bit faster then I reckon!!).
Guy Lambert and Louise Dempster entertained us with their own little duel as they fought out a sprint finish both gaining PBs although Guy should have been a gent and let Louise win. Geoff Read gave a nice pose for the camera as he sailed home in a another PB smashing time and Alan Peers continues to draw my admiration for his running ability having passed the 70 year old mark.
For me it was a PB I didn't expect but a very controlled and determined run saw me shave 13 seconds off my previous mark. The first lap started fast but I then did 3 miles worth of negative splits before starting to up the pace.
By halfway I was overtaking people for fun and ran a strong 2nd half up to about 9 and a half miles when my legs seemed like they had had enough. As I knew I was on target for a PB I dug deep and a final dash into the school grounds saw me home. Not enough energy to pose for the camera though (although I did manage a wave on the first lap)!!
Well done to all the Striders for some great times and for me it's no more races until next Feb as I start to focus on training for next year’s London Marathon."

Andrea Millington was taking photosThis race was removed from the Club Champs for this year.
The Sunday Cross Country League has been compressed into a much shorter timescale than usual, so several Saturday races clash with the Sunday League. So the Saturday races have been removed from the Club Champs for this season.
This was race 2 in this winter's L&D X/C League. The race distance was 9.8k.

Striders did not have the required number of runners for a team.
It was very wet & muddy, and that was just for those watching! It was the same 4 lap course (with minor variations) as used since 2008. It was 5.16 miles (8.3k) in 2011 as measured by a GPS.
Andrea & Jack Millington took over 100 photos!
Also, Michael Bradley took some short video clips of Striders running through "Julian's pond". They are available on Youtube:
No.1 - No.2 - No.3 - No.4
We normally try to record unofficial finishing times for Striders but we were unable to do it for this race.
