Delamere Forest Santa Run

We will be holding our traditional Santa Run in Delamere Forest on Sunday 17th December. There are several marked routes ranging from 1.5 to 7 miles - most of us will run the 7 mile route but there are lots of options for longer runs if you want. The pace will be similar to the regular Thursday runs, and we always muster.

The routes take us through Delamere Forest. The roads themselves are generally well laid underfoot so road shoes should be fine.

It's not just for hardcore runners - you can bring the whole family. Walkers, children and dogs (and even dog-walking children!) are welcome to join in.

After the runs there are a choice of two cafes for a well-deserved breakfast :-)

Tour Of Tameside

The [highlight color=bold]Tour Of Tameside[/highlight] is being revived in a different format in 2015. The new Tour is 3 races over varying terrain in 3 days, totalling the marathon distance. It is being organised by Sports Tours International.

Event History

Some runners may remember the original Tour Of Tameside. This was a week long multi-race event which ran during the 80's & 90's. The original Tour was 6 races in 7 days, totalling a double marathon. The format was 3 races, then a rest day, then another 3 races. There were different types of races, including fell, trail and road races.

I believe the last of the original Tours was in 2000. The Tour then missed 2001 & 2002, before returning in 2003 for one last year in a slightly revised 6-race format.

There was unprecedented demand for the Club’s Virgin London Marathon (VLM) guaranteed places, with 18 people with rejection emails applying for our reduced allocation of 2 places.

Why only 2 places this year?

There are two significant reasons why we have less Club VLM places this year:

Club membership numbers. The award of VLM guaranteed places is in proportion to the number of members who register with UK Athletics i.e. those who pay the extra £12 with your membership. If more members decide to pay this we will get more places.
Late renewals of membership i.e. any after end of June. If you renew late we will have less members on the date in July that we apply for VLM places. Can I remind you that there are still a few of you who have still not paid your 2015/16 membership and you will have contributed to this.

If we can get the registered first claim membership back above 150 on the date we apply we may get 3 VLM places again based on the current criteria.

Background

The club annually gets some guaranteed entries for the VLM. For quite a few years it was 3 places, in 2016 it is 2 places.

[The exact number of places depends on how many UK Athletics registered Club members we have. Also, for 2016 there are many more "good-for-age" qualified runners, so the organisers have reduced the number of guaranteed club places.]

Please note that these guaranteed places are not free, you still have to pay the entrance fee!

We have a Club ballot each year for the Club places. To qualify to be included in the Club ballot, you need to have tried to enter in the usual way and to have had a rejection letter from VLM for the 2016 race.

Race information

For those who don't know, there are three ways to get a place:

You may enter as part of the general ballot each year although the race is always hugely over-subscribed.
You can get a guaranteed place via a charity where you commit to raise a minimum amount for your chosen charity, often £2000.
Finally, if you can run quickly enough, you can get a "championship entry" or a "good for age" place!

Dennis marched all the way with the Huddersfield Marathon Band, who reclaimed their world record of the fastest marching band to complete a marathon!

Carolyn's time of 4:38:19 was a new club FV55 record, beating Janet Redpath's time of 4:56:34 set in London on 22-Apr-2007. It also broke her PB by 20 min 39 sec, set last year at London.

Race report from Carolyn Arber:

After getting a club place, I was going to be standing on the start line of the London Marathon for the 2nd year in a row. As I only started running at 50, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would run a marathon let alone two so was determined to enjoy the experience of my final marathon. My training had gone well, which was assisted by the relatively rain free and snow free months leading up to the big day and I was confident in beating my time from last year, as this would be my final marathon.

I travelled to London on the early train on Saturday morning surrounded by beer swilling Wigan fans who were on their way to Wembley so the journey was full of laughter and banter. I went straight to the Excel to pick up my number and soak in the atmosphere and treated myself to a new pair of 3/4 pants and a t-shirt with the marathon logo on, as this was to be my last marathon!

John and I then went for a walk to sort out the very important job of locating the pub where I was meeting the family and other Striders for post race beers and we then went and checked into our hotel. I began to lay out my race kit and pin my number on my vest and to my horror, discovered I had left my shorts at home???

The shops were closed by now so I had to decide if I was going to run in my underwear or wear the new 3/4 leggings I had just bought! A no brainer really, although the underwear could well have meant that I would be interviewed by the BBC again! So, first
rule of running, never wear anything new on race day, had to go out of the window, and doubly so as I also then had to wear my new top as I couldn't possibly wear orange and cerise pink together (it's a girl thing!).

I calmed down a bit and went to meet Kate, Alan and Vince for a lovely pasta feast albeit it a very dodgy area between a lap dancing club and a shop that specialises in cross dressing???

The following morning I took my potato cakes (my race day breakfast of choice) to the dining room to be told that it would not open until 8. There were several other runners staying, so in the dark, we managed to plug in the industrial toaster, break into the fridge and locate milk and butter and scramble together our most important meal of that day.

I got to the start after an emotional phone conversation with my mum on the train and was comforted by a fellow runner eating a cheese and pickle sandwich (a stranger breakfast than mine even) and arrived at the park. I soaked in the atmosphere in the sun as this was going to be my last marathon (have I mentioned that?) and queued (several times) for the loo before making my way to the pens only to find myself at the back of pen 9 with all the walk/runners. No use worrying about that then as I was more concerned that it was getting warmer and I was in 3/4 pants.

Eventually we got going, but it was very crowded and there were people in front of me walking before the mile 1 marker???? I weaved my way through them and passed the marching band and other various fancy dressers, but found it difficult to get into a rhythm as it was so congested. Never mind Cal, I said to myself, this is your last marathon so just enjoy it.

Unbelievably, my pace was pretty constant and I got through 13.1 miles just where I wanted to be and feeling strong. I had seen my family a couple of times and the crowd support was amazing, the sunshine had brought everyone out and there was a real party atmosphere. The weather was then getting hotter and a lot of people around me started to struggle, but I still felt good and was looking forward to seeing the family again at mile 16......... and that is when the wheels fell off.

They weren't where I thought they would be and I lost it mentally. They were only about 400m further in, but something had gone in my head and I just couldn't pick myself up after that. The warnings that marathons were 80% in your head and 20% in your legs certainly came true for me. I stopped and had a hug from all the family, and other bystanders too I think, and started running again, but however hard I tried to push on, those last 10 miles were so hard.

Again, the fantastic supporters lining the route were amazing and really lifted my flagging spirit and I managed to not look at all the lost souls in Blackfriars Tunnel wailing and moaning like Dante's inferno, and made it onto Birdcage Walk knowing the end was in sight. I even managed to smile and overtake a few people up the Mall and finally I was over the finishing line, of my last marathon!

My time wasn't what I had wanted, but was 20 minutes quicker than last year and a new club age record, so not a bad result in all.

I made it to the pub and swapped stories with Karl, Alan, Rob and Geoff and we all enjoyed some post race beers and met up with our families and the Striders support team of Kate and Vince!

I have now decided to hang up my marathon shoes and get back out those Jimmy Choo's! High heels; I have missed you.

As I write this the pain has started to fade ( I can only compare it to giving birth) and I've done that twice and now done a marathon twice too so this is it................or is it?????

2014 race information

The race starts at Runcorn Railway Station, a short distance from the parking area.

The course goes across the Runcorn Widnes Bridge, finishing in the village of Hale. Buses are provided to take you back to the parking in Runcorn.

Entry fee: £13 for club runners (£5 extra on the day). Both on-line and postal entry are available.

Parking: Picow Farm Road, Runcorn, WA7 4UD.

The race uses chip timing.

Standish Hall Trail Race 10k

This very friendly race is organised by Wigan Phoenix and is a "very approximate 10k" according to the entry form! However, Les' GPS showed just over 6.2 miles (with 400ft climb) in both Oct 2011 and Feb 2012.

It is a multi-lap trail race, run wholly off road on bridle paths and woodland trails, with less than a hundred yards of tarmac path. The race is run twice a year, in October and February.

It can be very muddy in places, depending on the weather, and it is a fairly hilly course. For more info, contact Les or Anne Hewitt who have run the race several times.

The organiser usually gives out lots of prizes (e.g. Sweatshop vouchers, bottles of wine) to high finishers in age categories and also as spot prizes.

Race venue: Britannia Wigan Hotel, Almond Brook Road, Standish, Wigan, WN6 0SR (off J27 M6). It is about ½ mile to the start in Arbour Lane.

Entry fee: £6 + £1 on the day. [You can pre-enter the October race & the following February's race for £10, with one cheque or on-line.]

Here is a race report from Julian Spencer:

"There was a bumper entry at the Falesia 5k with 112 finishers. The course record was smashed by Estonian runner, Kiuts Keio, in a time of 15:02. He took around 90 seconds off the previous fastest time.

Nine Striders finished, although unfortunately Brad Ehlen had to drop out. The only Strider to win a prize was Anne Fortune as first LV55 in a time of 25:20. This was a debut race in Portugal for Christine Ramsdale.

A huge contingent from the German Club, Hamburger Laufladen, took part. This is the Club that Tony Bell and Shelley have joined in Germany.

Conditions were superb, with the appearance of the sun properly all morning with not a raindrop in site and no wind either. The tough course of 2¾ laps has three descents and two climbs, so although it is a net downhill course it is not ideal for fast times."

2013 race information

Flat, rural course. Bar, refreshments, showers and changing.

Race HQ: The Clubhouse (formerly BICC/Pirelli), Wrexham Industrial Estate, LL13 9PQ.

Entry fee: £12 for club runners. NO ENTRIES ON THE DAY and no entries after 10-Feb-2013. Race limit is 500.

The race entry limit is usually reached before the closing date.

2012 race on Sunday 19-Feb-2012 at 11am

Unfortunately, someone turned a direction sign around (twice) so the race organisers know that some runners went a shortened route of approx 11.3 miles. There is a statement and apology from them on the Wrexham Road Runners [highlight color=bold]web site[/highlight].

Rob Hough was one of the runners who were wrongly directed and did a shorter distance. Colin Martin was also wrongly directed and went some distance down the wrong route, but he then turned back so his race time was for a longer distance than the half marathon. Dave Hudd also ran longer than the half marathon route, but not quite as long as Colin!

Our other runners did the full distance although some report the distance as recorded on their Garmin was a little long at 13.2 miles. The route was different from the usual route because of road works. Unfortunately, Rob's run does not qualify for Club Standards or Championships but everyone else's does.

Janet Redpath's time of 2:12:55 stands as a new Striders Club FV60 record, breaking Anne Hewitt's time of 2:15:15 set in last years race.

It is close to Beacon Country Park where the Skem cross country is held – carry on up Beacon Lane and the pub is on your right. It is about 30 mins drive from Birchwood.

Burtonwood 5 Mile Road Race route

The race started and finished at the Burtonwood Bridge Inn (the pub no longer exists) and the race route was on roads in & around the area of Burtonwood.

It consisted of the first lap of about 2¼ miles which came back past the Bridge Inn, followed by a second lap of about 2¾ miles. Both laps were anti-clockwise.

From the start with the Bridge Inn on your left, the route turns left after about 100 yards into Chapel Lane, which at about ½ mile becomes Fir Tree Lane, then Lumber Lane. Continue until about 1½ miles and turn left into Forshaw's Lane, then left at about 1¾ miles into Broad Lane. Carry on as the road becomes Phipps Lane to pass the Bridge Inn on your left and start the second lap.

Follow the same route until you get to Forshaw's Lane at about 3½ miles. Do not turn left but carry straight on into Collins Green Lane. At just over 4 miles, turn left into Penny Lane, then at about 4¼ miles turn left into Broad Lane. Continue along the road to re-join the route of the first lap, as the road becomes Phipps Lane and returns to the finish at the Bridge Inn.

Burtonwood 5 Mile Road Race

[important color=red title=Race now cancelled]After 9 years of running the race without incident, the local council imposed the requirement on the organisers to have road closures.

This means that unfortunately the road race and fun run has now been permanently cancelled following the last race in 2013.

The Burtonwood 5 Mile Road race was run from 2005 to 2013. The race was run on an accurately measured 5 mile road course on country lanes in & around Burtonwood.

There was also a fun run which was approximately 1.8 miles (not accurately measured).

[highlight color=red]The 5 mile race was run under UK Athletics Rules. The minimum age for runners was 15 years old on race day.[/highlight]

The race was organised by [highlight color=bold]Burtonwood Bridge ARLFC[/highlight], assisted by [highlight color=bold]Spectrum Striders Running Club[/highlight].

Veteran's categories were in 10 year age bands, up to 55 for women and 60 for men.
